Robert D. Sanford

Robert (Dusty) Sanford has practiced law in San Francisco specializing in commercial and business litigation.  Mr. Sanford has handled business disputes, complex litigation, class actions, unfair business practice cases, civil rights and employment cases.  He has experience in a wide variety of pre-trial and trial matters.  Mr. Sanford has briefed and argued appeals before the California Court of Appeals and Colorado Court of Appeals.

Examples of Mr. Sanford’s business litigation experience include:

  • A civil rights action involving the scope of police officers’ duty to ensure exculpatory evidence is disclosed to a defendant (Tennison v. City and County of San Francisco, 570 F.3d 1078 (9th Cir. 2009).);
  • An appeal that determined the EPA is limited to reasonable attorney fees under CERCLA (United States v. Chapman, 146 F.3d 1166 (9th Cir. 1998).);
  • A class action for unfair business practices against a title insurance company which resulted in a significant settlement following trial (State ex rel. Harris v. Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP (2006) 39 Cal. App.4th 1220, 48 Cal.Rptr.3rd 144 (2006);
  • A wage and hour class action representing exotic dancers which resulted in a significant settlement in favor of the class following trial; and
  • Successful mediation of various disputes, including property damage from subsidence of a hillside in Hercules, California; property damage from a large explosion in San Francisco; and resolution of a shareholder dispute in a closely-held corporation.

Mr. Sanford received his degree from Colgate University and earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley.
